First Rio Dark Matter Workshop - March 16-20, CBPF

The workshop aims at fostering the interaction of researchers and students active or interested in research on Dark Matter and related fields, in the Rio de Janeiro area, but also extending to Brazil and Latin America, promoting cross collaboration among different institutions. The program of this short workshop is composed of invited talks, short contributed talks and a lot of time for discussions, practical activities and hack sessions.

Topics include: Astrophysical Observations, Direct Detection, Indirect Detection, Accelerator Searches, Instrumentation, Modified Gravity, Theoretical Models, Early Universe.

As most of you know, we will be holding the First Rio de Janeiro Dark Matter meeting next week, on March 19 and 20, at CBPF (directions below). This meeting aims to gather the community working on all aspects of Dark Matter theory and experiments, from astrophysics and cosmology to astroparticle and particle physics, in the Rio de Janeiro region, fostering the interaction among participants. The meeting will be informal, with time for discussions. We ask the speakers to start with a short introduction to their broad field, to then go into the motivations and aims of their specific research and finally present current results and/or plans for the future. The talks will be 25 min at most, with 5 min for questions. We will have presentations from researchers from the Rio area and also from UFES and UFJF and from La Plata and Buenos Aires.

The meeting will be held at the Oliveira Castro meeting room, on the ground floor at the Brazilian Center for Physics Research (CBPF), located at Rua Dr. Xavier Sigaud, 150. Please have an ID document with you to enter CBPF. As this is an informal meeting, we do not have registration, but please add your name to the list at the entrance of the meeting room, take a badge and write your name and institution on the tag. This will help communication between the participants.

About the COVID-19 (new coronavirus) situation:

We are aware of the rapidly developing COVID-19 situation worldwide. As you know meetings have been canceled due to the concerns of spreading the virus, either from the income os foreign visitors from more affected countries, as well as the domestic transmission from conglomeration of people. The Rio DM meeting involves a quite small number of participants, mostly from the Rio de Janeiro region, with only a couple of international participants from a country with current COVID-19 incidence comparable to (and, actually, smaller than) Brazil. We understand that the circulation of people for the meeting will be at the same level of any every day situation, unlike a large conference. We thus evaluate that holding and participating in this meeting offers no larger risk of COVID-19 than our normal academic life in our institutions. Therefore, we are not calling out this meeting and confirm the scheduled dates.

On the other hand, as for every citizen in the world, we are raising the attention of the participants to take all the standard protective measures against the virus, such as washing hands with soap frequently, avoiding close contact, etc. There will be alcohol gel for the participants, bathrooms with running water are available on the side of the meeting room. Our meeting room is quite large, with good air circulation, located at the ground floor of CBPF. Just in case, if any participant is feeling any of the flu symptoms, we kindly request that they avoid attending the meeting and stay at home. We will make all slides available on a website and will promote the communication of any person that could not attend due to health issues with the speakers. However, please notice that due to the nature of this meeting, we are note planning remote participation for now.

Fighting to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is important for all countries, governments, companies and individuals, but again, we believe this meeting offers no extra risk at this point. On the other hand, it is a great way to foster the communication and interaction of those interested in DM research and will somewhat help to mitigate the cancellation of much larger and international events.
